This American Life Hires Laura Starecheski and Tobin Low

This American Life is thrilled to announce that Laura Starecheski and Tobin Low will be joining our staff later this month! They’ll both join the team as editors.

Tobin Low is the co-creator of the LGBTQ podcast Nancy, which recently concluded its award-winning run at WNYC Studios. He served as co-host and co-managing editor, covering stories on everything from LGBTQ protections in the workplace to finding queer community as an adult. During the show’s five seasons, it was named as one of the best podcasts of the year by Time Magazine, The Guardian, and Entertainment Weekly. The show won awards from the Third Coast International Audio Festival, and the New York Festival’s International Radio Awards. Tobin has also served as a producer on shows like Radiolab and More Perfect. Before making the jump to radio, Tobin worked in New York as a professional cellist. And before that, he was a child who attended circus camp.

Laura Starecheski comes to us from Reveal, where they reported, produced and edited radio stories for the show. Recently, they served as a lead producer and reporter for Reveal's first serialized investigation, “American Rehab,” which focused on addiction treatment programs that require unpaid work. The series was widely and critically acclaimed, and catalyzed a federal investigation into the industry. At Reveal they also covered everything from racial discrimination in mortgage lending to the origins of the Pizzagate conspiracy theory and won a duPont-Columbia Award and a Peabody Award, among others. Laura got their start as a fact-checker in New York City before beginning in public radio at WNYC. They went on to work at the show State of the Re:Union, and later worked as a health reporter on NPR's Science Desk.
